I recently obtained a book on Search Engine Optimization for Dummies! It is easily found at www.download.com if you just type in seo for dummies in the search engine for the download.com website.

Anyway, the book is full of ways to help increase your site ranking in Google and Yahoo and many other search engines.

I have found that the best way to increase your ranking is to get placed on other people's websites as a link. Reciprocal links are great (where you exchange links with another webmaster), however the most valuable links are one way. For instance a link to your site from a directory, a similar vendor or whatever else gets you higher ranking than exchanged links. This is not to say that reciprocal links are not valuable! Don't get me wrong!

There are many ways to obtain links. One of the easiest is to just email people you know who have sites and have them put a link to you on their site. Submitting your site to link sites is another way. For instance if you have a real estate business, submit your site to real estate directories. You may even want to invest the time to start your own list site, or directory.

Meta Tags are important! No matter what you may have been told about the significance of meta tags, it is important to have them in the source code of your website. A typical example of meta tags goes something like this:

The keywords are important and you want to make sure you are listing phrases and keywords that are popular on the web (being looked up a lot on Google or Yahoo). A good tool to use is the Google keyword tool, which can be found at this link!

But by far the best way to increase your ranking is to have people link to you!

Submit your site to linksites for your industry.

Write an article about something that people would be interested in and put it on your site!

Have an article about something in the industry you are affiliated with on your site.

Put a link to a current event that you are interested in on your site with a small paragraph about it.
